Em 1948, a Declaração Universal dos Direitos Humanos proclamou que a alimentação é um direito básico do ser humano e em 1969, a Declaração sobre o Progresso e o Desenvolvimento no Campo Social afirmou que é necessário eliminar a fome e a desnutrição e garantir o direito a uma nutrição adequada.

Hoje (2011) a população mundial está em quase 7 bilhões, e a estimativa é que chegue a 8 bilhões em 2025; 9 bilhões em 2040 e 10 bilhões em 2060.
In the first century of the Christian era, the world's population fluctuated between 200 and 300 million.
