Pérgamo, fundada antes do Século V a.C., é a atual Bergama: era uma cidade grega antiga que se situava na Mísia, no noroeste da Anatólia, a mais de 20 quilômetros do Mar Egeu, numa colina isolada do Vale do Rio Caicos (atual Bakırçay), cujo nome antigo era Teutrani.
Pergamum, founded before the fifth century b.C., is the current Bergama, was an ancient Greek city that stood in Mysia, northwestern Anatolia, more than 20 miles from the Aegean Sea, an isolated hill of Vale do Rio Caicos (current Bakırçay), whose ancient name was Teutrani.
Não temos a data de destruição de Pérgamo, mas sabe-se que ocorreu um terremoto em Filadélfia, que atingiu cidades da costa leste do Mar Egeu, no ano 17 d.C., e Pérgamo situava-se na região.

Pérgamo foi também uma das sete igrejas mencionadas no livro do Apocalipse, na Bíblia, por ter recebido uma das cartas preparadas e enviadas por João: possuía uma biblioteca de prestígio que no seu tempo só perdia em importância para a tão famosa Biblioteca de Alexandria.
Pergamum was also one of the seven churches mentioned in Revelation in the Bible, to have received one letter prepared and sent by John, had a library of prestige in his day second only in importance to its famous Library of Alexandria.

“Conheço as tuas obras, e onde habitas, que é onde está o trono de Satanás; e reténs o meu nome, e não negaste a minha fé, ainda nos dias de Antipas, minha fiel testemunha, o qual foi morto entre vós, onde Satanás habita. Mas algumas poucas coisas tenho contra ti, porque tens lá os que seguem a doutrina de Balaão, o qual ensinava Balaque a lançar tropeços diante dos filhos de Israel, para que comessem dos sacrifícios da idolatria, e se prostituíssem. Assim tens também os que seguem a doutrina dos nicolaítas, o que eu odeio. Arrepende-te, pois, quando não em breve virei a ti, e contra eles batalharei com a espada da minha boca”.
