Os restauradores da Comissão Pontifícia de Arqueologia Sacra que trabalham na catacumba de Santa Tecla, perto da Via Ostiense de Roma, trouxeram à luz a imagem do Apóstolo Paulo.
The restorers of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology working in the catacombs of Santa Tecla, near the Via Ostiense in Rome, brought to light the image of the Apostle Paul.
A imagem faz parte de afrescos do século IV, ocultos sob uma espessa massa calcária escondida pela decoração da abóbada de um canto do cubículo da catacumba de Santa Tecla, segundo informou o Jornal L’Osservatore Romano, em julho de 2009.
The image is part of the fourth century frescoes, concealed under a thick calcareous mass hidden by the decoration of the dome of a corner cubicle of the catacombs of Santa Tecla, reported the newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, in July 2009.
Graças à técnica do laser, foi possível fazer emergir “a característica fisionômica do apóstolo dos povos na arte paleocristã” (*), explica o Jornal: estas características correspondentes ao ideal de pensador - grandes olhos dirigidos ao infinito, bochechas afundadas, início de calvície e barba longa acabada em ponta - “não deixam lugar a dúvidas em sua identificação”.
Thanks to the laser technique, it was possible to bring out “the characteristic physiognomy of the Apostle of the peoples in ancient Christian art” (*), “explained the Journal, these features corresponding to the ideal of thinker - big eyes directed upwards, sunken cheeks, early balding and bearded finished in a point - “leave no room for doubt in his identification”.

O descobrimento do rosto de Paulo levou os investigadores a dedicar-se a desvelar as imagens dos outros três cantos: efetivamente, apareceram as imagens de outros dois apóstolos, um particularmente jovem e o outro de traços marcados (talvez João e Tiago), e de um terceiro, possivelmente Pedro.
The discovery of Paul's face has led researchers to devote themselves to unveil the images of the other three corners: indeed, there were the images of two other apostles, especially a young man and the other marked traits (perhaps John and James), and a third, possibly Peter.
