A epistola a Filemom, cujo nome se deriva do destinatário da mesma, Filemon, um cristão de muitas posses e que tinha escravos, e que se convertera em decorrência do ministério do apóstolo Paulo: este novo cristão morava na cidade de Colossos e a igreja de lá fazia as reuniões em sua residência.
The epistle to Philemon, whose name derives from the intended recipient, Philemon, a Christian who had many possessions and slaves, and who was converted as a result of the ministry of the Apostle Paul: This new Christian living in the city of Colosse and the church there made the meetings at his residence.
Esta epístola aparece na Bíblia usada pelos cristãos depois das cartas pastorais e antes das chamadas cartas universais.

Durante muito tempo não era tranquilamente aceita sua autoria como sendo de Paulo, porém seu estilo e seu vocabulário estão intimamente relacionados com os escritos de Romanos, Coríntios, Gálatas e Filipenses, havendo internamente uma evidência nos versiculos 1,9 e 19 onde o nome de quem a redigiu é mencionado: as evidências externas de que o apóstolo Paulo escreveu esta carta é confirmada pelo Cânon Muratoriano (fragmento encontrado pelo sacerdote Italiano Ludovico Muratori na Biblioteca Ambrosiana de Milão e que fora escrito em 170 d. C.).

Paulo realmente escreveu esta carta durante o tempo em que esteve preso em Roma, entre os anos 59- 61 d.C., sendo que no mesmo período escreveu as cartas aos Efésios (crentes de Éfeso) e aos Colossenses (crentes de Colossos), o que já não deixa mais dúvida.
Paul actually wrote this letter during the time he was arrested in Rome between the years 59-61 AD, while in the same period he wrote the letters to the Ephesians (believers of Ephesus) and to the Colossians (believers in Colosse), which has leaves no more doubt.
