Cirene foi uma cidade dos gregos situada na Lídia Cirenaica, região do norte do continente africano e ficava aproximadamente 30 km do mar, com altitude de 600 metros: foi fundada no Século VII a. C. por famílias de Tera, uma ilha grega.
